COWBOYS MAKE A FRANCHISE-ALTERING BET, SEND CEEDEE LAMB TO NEW YORK

DALLAS — The Cowboys aren’t calling it a rebuild. They aren’t calling it a surrender after three consecutive losses, either.

They’re calling it an investment in what comes next.

Dallas stunned the MOF landscape by trading superstar wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to the New York Jets, moving one of the biggest names on its roster in exchange for WR Adonai Mitchell, LT Olu Fashanu and a 2028 first-round pick.

For a Cowboys team trying to stop a three-game slide, the timing will undoubtedly raise eyebrows. But Coach TSG made one thing clear following the deal: Dallas believes this roster can absorb the loss of Lamb while becoming stronger in an area the coaching staff believes desperately needed attention.

“We felt it was in the best interest of the team,” TSG said. “CeeDee has been phenomenal for us. But long term, we believe we gained a lot in bringing in Mitchell and Fashanu.”

The Cowboys Are Betting on George Pickens

The biggest question is obvious: Who replaces CeeDee Lamb?

Dallas already has its answer.

George Pickens.

Pickens has operated opposite Lamb this season and, according to TSG, has been every bit as effective. With Lamb gone, there will no longer be any debate about whose receiving corps this is.

“GP” is WR1.

“He was the first one we spoke to once everything went into play,” TSG said. “He’s ready and willing. He has more than earned it.”

Dallas also believes the rest of its receiver room has done enough to justify the gamble. TSG specifically pointed toward Ryan Flournoy, KaVontae Turpin and Camden Brown as players who have demonstrated that the Cowboys have sufficient depth to withstand Lamb’s departure.

Mitchell gives Dallas another young piece to develop, but this trade doesn’t appear to be about finding a one-for-one replacement for Lamb.

It’s about changing where Dallas is investing.

Protecting No. 4 Changes the Equation

That brings us to perhaps the most important name involved in this trade who technically wasn’t traded at all:

Dak Prescott.

After Dallas’ latest loss, TSG emphasized the need to keep his quarterback upright. The Cowboys believe their receiving corps is deep enough to survive without Lamb. They weren’t nearly as comfortable ignoring the offensive line.

That made the opportunity to acquire Olu Fashanu particularly attractive.

“Keeping #4 up is priority,” TSG said. “The current WR room — GP, Flournoy, Turp, even Camden Brown — have all showed we are okay with depth at WR. So investing in Fashanu was a given when the opportunity presented itself.”

That may ultimately define how this trade is judged in Dallas.

The Cowboys sacrificed an established superstar at a position of strength to acquire a young offensive tackle, another young receiver and future first-round draft capital.

That’s a significant bet.

“Look at What the Film Shows”

The uncomfortable part is the timing.

Dallas has lost three straight games. Trading away Lamb in the middle of that skid will inevitably create questions about whether the Cowboys are shifting their attention away from the current season.

TSG rejected that interpretation.

Instead, he described the decision as one built around longevity and challenged both his players and Cowboys fans to trust what the organization sees.

“Look at what the film shows,” TSG said. “We know what we are doing and trust our guys to step up — the fans should too.”

There was also no bitterness toward Lamb on his way out.

TSG said Dallas thanked its former star for everything he brought to the organization and expressed confidence that Lamb will make an immediate impact in New York.

“He will be fine, and that team just got better because of him.”

And for anyone expecting this blockbuster to be the beginning of a larger Dallas fire sale?

Don’t.

When asked whether the Cowboys could make additional moves before the deadline, TSG’s response was short:

“We are good where we are.”

So this is the team Dallas intends to ride with.

CeeDee Lamb is gone. George Pickens gets his opportunity to become the centerpiece of the passing game. Fashanu arrives with the responsibility of helping protect Prescott. Mitchell joins a young receiving group. And another first-round pick goes into Dallas’ pocket for the future.

Now comes the part that ultimately matters.

The Cowboys have made their bet. The players they kept have to prove them right.
